O MTV Video Music Awards deste ano foi a primeira premiação (relativamente grande) a acontecer durante a pandemia de coronavírus. “Lady Gaga e BTS assumem o controle do previsivelmente bizarro MTV Video Music Awards 2020”, observa publicação do AvClub, que define que este foi um dos VMAs “mais estranhos e artificiais do que nunca”.
Teve muitas máscaras, certamente, mas ao mesmo tempo que constantemente era incentivado o uso do equipamento de proteção, você podia observar muitos abraços e pessoas entregando as estatuetas, visivelmente sem lavar as mãos antes. Embora o evento tenha acontecido em palcos ao ar livre, com Lady Gaga fazendo “questão de trazer uma coisa nova no rosto toda vez que ganhava”.
Quanto a premiação em si, foi levantada questões sobre a brutalidade policial e a pandemia em andamento, incentivando o distanciamento social e o uso de máscaras faciais; Miley Cyrus estava lá, mais uma vez montando em uma bola, que dessa vez não era a de demolição, teve o BTS marcando uma maior atenção para o k-pop, bem como Lady Gaga de volta ao passado fazendo as coisas de Lady Gaga.
Ah, teve os prêmios; The Weeknd levou o principal pelo videoclipe de “Blinding Lights”, Taylor Swift ganhou o prêmio de direção por “The Man”, embora ela não estivesse lá para receber. Também teve vários prêmios novos inventados para essa edição para as produções criadas durante a pandemia.
Lady Gaga ganhou várias vezes, ganhando também um novo prêmio Tricon, uma homenagem que parece ter sido inventada especificamente para ela por seu desempenho no último ano como artista musical, atriz e ativista – não está claro se isso é uma coisa nova ou apenas uma substituição do tal Video Vanguard, como uma tentativa de se distanciar de Michael Jackson.
